Sun reveals new Opteron servers
Sun Microsystems has revealed a new line of its SunFire V40z servers. They feature Advanced Micro Devices’ (AMD) Opteron 800 microprocessors. According to Sun, the servers can be configured to support Opteron 844, 848, or 850 processors as well.
The V40z will be Sun’s second line of servers to support AMD’s Opteron server based chips. The first line, V20z, started shipping in April 2004. The firm reports the revenue to be good from the Opteron based server models.
Sun Microsystems will continue to retail Intel’s Xeon based servers, according to Sun CEO Scott McNealy.
The company also unveiled two new Opteron based workstations, modeled under the W1000z and W2100z names. The both models are equipped with either one or two Opteron 200 microprocessors and can be purchased with either Sun Solaris, Red Hat, or Microsoft Windows.
