Bose: Planning an Apple iPod Rival?

(Insider Series) – Although details are currently sketchy, we know for a fact that Bose is scheduled to make a major announcement on 2nd March in Taipei, Taiwan. Bose officials are planning an event in Taipei where the presentation is expected to take place.

After inquiring about the speculation, we were told it was not business related, but a product launch. Naturally, Bose didn’t reveal anything of significance after confirming to our inquiries vaguely.

We further queried and asked if it was Bose who was making the announcement or one of its partners, which includes Apple Computer, Inc. Interestingly enough, we were given intriguing smiles (a way of marketers to lead people unofficially in the right direction) after we presented the question.

We also know that rumors are rife about Apple’s touch-screen video iPod, which is currently under scrutiny by the Apple community (and others) in regards to control management.

Guess what? Bose already offers a touch-screen remote with the myriad menus and such with its LifeStyle 50 range of products. While we aren’t trying to imply anything, the possibilities are definitely there.

Looking at Bose’s products today, there is one product that definitely has us flummoxed. That’s the Triport music system. In the day and age of the Apple iPod, Bose apparently decided that a plain old MP3 discman was good enough. Could it be that Bose is coming out with its own portable player?

If it does, it could be interesting because then, for the first time, you would have a brand rivaling, and in fact bettering Apple’s niche appeal. Bose is not economical by any measure; it’s shamelessly elitist and has a serious class statement.

If the player delivers, we could, for the first time, see a serious challenger to the iPod, but then again, how many times have we heard that statement before? We just hope it has a repeat function, something we sorely missed in the Triport music system.
