Microsoft Confirms Six Versions for Windows Vista
Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software maker, has finally confirmed the number of versions of Windows Vista that’s due for launch in 2H of 2006.
All in all, Microsoft is expected to release six different versions to target specific groups of consumers. The company has categorized its customers into six sectors, which doesn’t include specific offerings for 64-bit systems, multimedia computers or Tablet PCs.
"We’re delivering the exact same number of offerings as in Windows XP, but the big difference is that each of those offerings are targeted differently with a different set of features," said Barry Goffe, Director, Windows Client Product Marketing, Microsoft Corp. (Reuters).
Microsoft further added that Vista’s key initiative is to improve security, simplify search across platform, and add a cleaner interface that’s easier to work with for users.
The six versions include Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Ultimate. The software maker said it expects Windows Vista Home Premium to be the mainstream consumer product, which allows consumers to take advantage of multimedia features, including handwriting recognition for Tablet PCs.
The company’s Windows Vista Home Premium would be the mid-end option between Windows Vista Ultimate (with business-oriented features) and Windows Vista Home Basic (without multimedia capabilities). - Subscribe to CoolTechZone.com’s RSS Feed
Windows Vista Business would be available for small and medium-sized businesses, while Windows Vista Enterprise would be targeted at large corporations with encryption features and compatibility tools.
All versions will support 64-bit microprocessors right out of the box.
The company is expected to release "N" series of Windows Vista as well for the European region. The "N" series will exclude Windows Media Player from the operating system as part of the EU ruling against Microsoft.
