PS3 to Run Linux: March of the Penguin
Since I’m a self-confessed non-gamer, whenever a new console comes out, I’m more interested in the hardware driving the beast than the supporting game titles. Naturally, I’ve been watching the whole Microsoft vs. Sony vs. Nintendo ordeal with the next generation of consoles. I’m particularly interested in the PS3, which seems to be the only one with new technology (Blu-Ray and Cell processor). Today, much to my delight, I read that the PS3 will be running a customized version of Linux as its operating system. I find this incredibly smart for a few reasons, and not just because of my bias as a Linux user. Firstly, since Linux is open-source, Sony does not have to pay for the kernel itself and is free to modify it as necessary. That’s something you can’t do with Windows. Speaking of Microsoft, it’s also smart for Sony to use Linux, since our friends in Redmond are their biggest competitor in the console market. And finally, Linux is a fully-featured, mature operating system. What does this mean for the PS3? Simply put, it’ll be able to do more than just play games. This is a smart move for Sony overall.
