Microsoft: Irresponsible, Distrustful and Lame

(Column) – And again, Windows Vista is delayed to January 2007, as opposed to its original and vague Q4 2006 release date. What is Microsoft thinking? Seriously, the company has been delaying Vista for a long time now. Not only that, but Microsoft stripped numerous critical features to make the deadline, but apparently the laziness, disguised as security improvements this time, depicts irresponsibility and distrustfulness beyond what most of us expect from the Redmond, Washington-based software "giant" (so much for that moniker).

Microsoft needs to get its act together to maintain its credibility, at least whatever’s leftover; it’s atrocious to see a company with nearly unlimited resources push back products for perfection, since any sensible user knows its wishful thinking. "This came down to a few weeks. We’re trying to do the responsible thing here," said Jim Allchin in a recent conference call. Oh really, is that so? The only thing you are doing is delaying the next round of bugs in a new package and capturing headlines because of incompetence. And then you puzzlingly wonder why people dislike the company so much. Believe it or not, this is where having limited competition in a marketplace is sadistic.

Microsoft clearly has no one to compete against, and thus it doesn’t necessarily feel obliged to release a competent product. Only if we had a few OS makers, and the world’s largest software maker would bend over backwards to release an OS on its due date, regardless the lack of features and security enhancements.

In all seriousness, why is it taking Microsoft so long to release its next-gen. OS that’s supposed to revolutionize the way we compute regularly? The lack of resources (whether monetary or labor intensive) can’t be it. The only rational consensus that outlines Microsoft’s irresponsibility to its users is lack of organization. There couldn’t possibly be another reason (no, security enhancements isn’t it, since the company knows very well that crackers are desperate to rip it apart as soon as it debuts officially). Thinking otherwise is childish.

Unfortunately for OEMs, such as Dell and HP, the shopping rush would be a total bust right before Vista makes its entry. If anything, Microsoft should be working on releasing the OS before time to benefit its partners, and in return, itself to cover the holiday season. Thankfully, according to industry analysts and observers, mainstream computer manufacturers shouldn’t be too worried, since synchronizing Windows Vista as a mainstream product would take joint marketing efforts anyways, and substantiating noticeable sales during the busy season wouldn’t be possible. A breather for OEMs for sure…

As for enthusiasts, it’s not going to make an impact at all. Enthusiasts will invest in Vista despite its delay and the mainstream crowd could care less. In technicality, Microsoft is safe from all ends, but it still doesn’t explain the considerably poor judgment. Quite honestly, Microsoft’s actions in regards to Vista (delays and reduction in features) are sadly irresponsible, distrustful and lame and the company can’t do anything to gain back its credibility, assuming it had any to begin with.
