When PDF Files Attack BlackBerry Phones

Today there was news of an exploit that affects users of the BlackBerry Attachment Service. Apparently the vulnerability in question is called into play once a user opens up an infected PDF file on their BlackBerry mobile device. The end result of this exploit, can vary from the infected PDF creating a space for a Denial of Service Attack down to other code execution which might create more localized issues for the BlackBerry owner.

It should be made clear that this exploit is a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) exploit, not so much one with your mobile device specifically. Affected  systems include: Microsoft Windows version 2003 or 2008 and BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.0 – 4.1.4.

What does this mean to you?

Unless you are an admin or work closely with one, there is not a lot you can do about this. The people in your IT dept. however, are likely already working on installing the needed patch to get things back on track. If anything, this should serve as a constant reminder that even mobile devices, can be subjected to various exploits already in existence out there. If you have concerns, it would be worthwhile to get in touch with your IT dept. on this and other mobile security matters. After all, the best security you can get is knowing how to prevent huge issues from happening in the first place.
