In-car Hotspots Thanks To GM
In an effort to regain the American mind-share with their automotive products, GM is going to be offering in-car WiFi with their existing generation of Chevy automobiles. This WiFi service will be installed at the dealership and is made available at a price of $29-59 per month with a service agreement. The hardware need is a router going for a full $199. Betanews goes on to explain that as good as this service is, it may not provide the kind of quality you might see from competing solutions such as the Novatel MiFi which provides access to 3G broadband.
What does this mean to you?
On the surface, something like this sounds awesome. Then again, so did Clearwire until people tried to get out of their contracts. There is no value in adding yet another contract to your monthly expenses. Despite the initial novelty of being able to stream music or other cool content to your car, I think most people do just fine with an iPhone connected to their existing stereo. Well that and it’s a lot cheaper.
