Facebook Gets Slapped With FTC Complaint Over Privacy

facebook_logoDespite Facebook’s intention of being cute to trick users into letting go of their information for search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing with its recent change in privacy settings, the Federal Trade Commission has received reports that may have the company get slapped for its indiscretion in the coming days. Electronic Privacy Information Center, a group that advocates Internet privacy, along with eight other organizations, filed a complaint with FTC on Thursday claiming that the social networking company is violating federal laws. We concur.

The issue here is that Facebook massively changed its stance against privacy and decided to open everyone’s information without much of their consent. The company claims to have welcomed users with a pop-up box and encouraged them to change their settings, but really, how many mainstream users are ever going to play with the privacy dials? Not very many, and we need the FTC to come down hard on Facebook for their mischievous tactics. Moves like these will have regulators all over Internet companies, which is something a lot of them wouldn’t necessary appreciate.
