Even in a tight economy, the Amazon Kindle has done a decent job at carving out a niche for itself throughout 2009. Both as a standalone hardware appliance and as an app on the iPhone and PC, the Kindle seems to be making inroads in changing how we read written content. Now we have Download Squad reporting that the Kindle is coming to a couple of more platforms here in the very near future – BlackBerry and OS X.

What does this mean to you?

First of all, who really cares about Kindle on the PC or OS X? My wife, a daily Kindle user on her iPhone, laughed when she heard Kindle was released on the PC. Her question was why would anyone bother reading a book on a notebook or a desktop? I concur with her, and instead, would say the big news here is Kindle on the BlackBerry. Even more interesting is the lack of a Kindle app on Android. Considering how open the Android platform is in contrast to others, it makes some wonder exactly what the holdup is with Kindle for Android, especially when comparing screen sizes with the BlackBerry.
