RIM Giving Serious Consideration To E-EDGE vs 3G Technology
For those frustrated with the broken promises that have been 3G, there is now talk of EDGE data networks that might provide a viable alternative. NetworkWorld is reporting that EDGE technology known as Evolved-EDGE or “E-EDGE” might be the perfect fit for RIM’s BlackBerry mobile device in lieu of accessing 3G networks. The idea behind RIM using E-EDGE vs. 3G networks is that they believe that the saturation problems with 3G is a non-issue with E-EDGE technology.
What does this mean to you?
While I cannot speak of 3G networks with all providers, 3G with AT&T is generally a national joke in the US. On a good day, late voicemail, missed calls. On a worse day, no phone ringing and dropped calls. Clearly the saturation issue is not being taken seriously and the industry’s answer thus far has been faster – 4G eventually. What bothers me is that no one is looking at the saturation problem. No one except RIM, that is.
