Apple Working on Modified iPhone OS for Apple Tablet

In addition to reporting on the total estimated sales for the upcoming Apple tablet, Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray also believes he has information on the operating system of the device. While Apple could certainly announce a full-fledged Mac OS X tablet, Munster believes the company will release a modified version of the iPhone OS that will allow the tablet to run full scale apps specific to the tablet and existing apps that are already available in the App Store. It’s definitive, the analyst notes, that Apple will want to leverage its success with the App Store and tie in the tablet to the iPhone and iPod Touch mobile devices.

“While there are several options ranging from a touch screen Mac OS X to an iPhone-like OS, we expect the tablet to be driven by a new version of Apple’s iPhone OS that runs a new category of larger apps alongside all the current apps from the App Store,” Munster said. “We believe Apple’s tablet would compete well in the netbook category even though it would not be a netback.”

So far so good, we can believe this reasoning. It only makes sense for Apple to leverage its other mobile products and tie in to the tablet. Personally, we’d love to see a Mac OS X tablet just to see if it could replace our need to have netbooks or notebooks. Then again, having an iPhone-like tablet would come in handy as well. After all, you can do a lot as it is, and the usability of apps would only go up over time.
