GSM Encryption Cracked

GSM technology for the mobile world, has been a bit of a standard in the US. For many mobile carriers, however, it seems that the encryption used to protect the data on the various networks is no longer that secure. Ars Technica is reporting that the cell industry remains unimpressed with the encryption cracking efforts of Karsten Nohl who has been saying for years that GSM is simply not that secure.

What does this mean to you?

Since I’ve never considered mobile phones to be secure whether they are CDMA or GSM, I don’t find myself concerned. I tend to look at cell phone information going back and forth with the same thoughts as most do with email. You can secure things all day long. But once the data is out there, it is likely to be intercepted by someone should they want it badly enough. So while Karsten Nohl’s work is interesting, I would not be overly concerned about it.
