Zune Eats iPod’s Dust in Recent Sales

Not expecting the Zune HD to have surpassed the iPod in sales by any stretch, there was however the expectation that the Zune HD would have done better than the 89th place in the Amazon Bestsellers list for electronics. And to further drive the point home, PCWorld points out that the Microsoft Zune is eating the iPod’s dust in holiday sales. What seems unfortunate and even preventable, as pointed out in the article, is the lack of promotion that Microsoft gave the Zune HD during the holidays this year. Clearly, this did not help holiday sales by any stretch.

What does this mean to you?

Even though I personally detest iTunes, as I think it is an overpriced/bloated joke, I feel strongly that it is this software’s lock-in that has made the iPod so successful even today. So while we have various MP3 player options available these days, the iPod wins out every time due to clever vendor lock-in bundled with brilliant marketing.

I just got my Zune HD 32 in blue from zune's site. I think one main thing to consider is how many other people may do so. I mean, if you were going to spend some money on something, why not make it more unique or personable.
  • I agree with you. That's why engraving is so popular if you order an iPod from the online Apple Store.

Plus Apple quickly lowered prices for their brand new line of iPods to undercut Zune HD price (in itself a gain for MS)
