Google Nexus One A Major Disappointment

Google’s highly anticipated Nexus One super-smartphone that took the technology industry with surprise is a major letdown. Google has only sold 20,000 units in its first week, and Motorola is already working to outdo Google with its upcoming Motorola Shadow that will leave the Nexus One far behind only after a few months after its launch. The company also faced major technical glitches that left users unsatisfied, and despite the feverish pitch, users just aren’t mesmerized by it anymore. Google would have done a lot better if they kept the phone under wraps and never released it.

Android as a whole is exciting, but when Google reveals a device that disappoints from sales and satisfaction metrics, it’s unacceptable. Rumors are already swirling about Google working on a follow up to the Nexus One. That has never happened with the iPhone where rumors of the inevitable next-generation iPhone completely overshadowed the just launched product.

There was a lot of hype around Nexus One, and it’s obvious that Google failed to deliver on its promises. The Nexus One is a great Android phone, perhaps the best in class, but with Google competing with its partners and vice versa to deliver the next best Android device is not going to make any one company a winner. For Google, it probably doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, Android as a platform wins, and that’s what Google wants.
