Wal-Mart Fail: Nexus One So Lame Even Wal-Mart Won’t Carry It!

This was a mistake that about half of the media covering the Nexus One today made. Seems that Wal-Mart goofed and led people to believe they were going to carry the Nexus One phone. Recent reports reflect that this was never the case and that even Wal-Mart has no interest in carrying the Google’s super-smartphone.

What does this mean to you?

This is so sad, it’s funny. Earlier there was much buzz at the prospect of the super-chain of retail stores potentially carrying the struggling Nexus One phone. Sadly, it seems that even this potentially needed good news was a bust. Clearly, Google needs to get this phone into the public eye and fast, if they want to have any chance of saving face.

  • They never marketed the phone. The reason was that this was a test into a new distribution system. Even one Google exec said they are only looking to sell about 150,000 in this test.

I'm a bit surprised at the WalMart move. If this is a legitimate test, they are now skewing the results. I think the new thinking of a vendor selling a phone themselves is a good model; but they need to market it like the Droid was marketed.

The other controversial thing with the Nexus is that there isn't a support number; it's email. I understand their position on this. When you buy a phone, RTFM, visit support forums, and then contact support if all else fails. Too much money/manpower is spent in telephone support with people asking stupid/lazy questions. Google is known to shake up markets with new thinking; I think this phone will do that.

(In hindsight, I should have made this comment one of my own blog posts; I went on a tangent! HA!)
