Apple Puts 1GHz A4 Chip in iPad
This must hurt for Intel. Instead of choosing Intel as its microprocessor technology supplier for the iPad, Apple went with designing the chip in-house through its P.A. Semi division. Earlier this year at CES 2010, we asked Intel about the rumors surrounding Apple’s iPad and its decision to design its own CPU. Intel, obviously being politically correct, said it’s not too worried about Apple moving away the world’s largest chipmaker.
If the iPad becomes supremely successful, Intel will feel the burn for a while.
We should also add that during the demo, the Apple iPad seemingly performed flawlessly with smooth transitions; however, some hands-on reviews indicate that in real world usage, the experience isn’t quite as buttery. We hope that’s not true. Having the iPhone 3G equivalent of the iPad with stuttering would be annoying.
