Apple iPad: The iPod Touch Killer?

Needham & Company Analyst Charlie Wolf had a number of insights to share that we covered earlier. Perhaps the single most thing that struck us was his warning about the iPod touch as a device that would be at a serious danger from the iPad. He believes the iPad will cannibalize iPod touch sales and grow at its expense. There’s some truth to that. For Web browsing and media consumption, we could see that happen to an extent. However, to say that the iPad will kill the iPod touch is unrealistic.

The iPod touch is a mobile device that touts portability as its biggest strength. Sure, it may not have the constant connectivity option with 3G, but a 10-inch device can’t compete with a gadget that’s sole purpose is offline media consumption. Not to mention, how many parents would purchase a tablet for their children to carry with everywhere they go over the more portable iPod touch? And how many people would actually purchase the iPad over the iPod touch to carry with them everywhere they go? Imagine pulling out your iPad at the gym and listening to music. Yeah, it’s not happening.

Interesting thought, but Wolf may be stretching his theory a bit too much.

No way the iPad will kill touch sales. The next version of the iPod Touch will probably be a lot more powerful, have longer battery time and may even be less expensive. People are still going to want a device they can slip into their pockets to listen to music. I'll bet the classic iPods will be killed off and replaced by the Touch. I'm not saying the Touch won't have some sales taken away, but I doubt it will be killed off by the iPad. In any event, Apple margins are so high on the iPad, a slight loss in Touch sales won't make much of a difference. I'd still want a smaller device to carry around if I'm on my bike or just walking in the streets. I'm not going to lug an iPad everywhere I go just to listen to music.
  • I do not believe the iPad will come anywhere close to killing the demand for the iPod touch. The sign and portability as you mentioned is too convenient compared to the iPad. The AT&T 3G means nothing either because I will continue to use the Verizon MiFi for both iPod Touch and the iPad. I do that as I explain here... http://bit.ly/MyWiFi
