Macmillan Books Back On Amazon
Macmillan, the publisher that had a dispute with the world’s largest online retailer Amazon, is back in business over its digital books, reports BusinessWeek. After Apple revealed its iPad, Macmillan went back to Amazon in hopes of renegotiating its e-book prices and a revenue sharing structure that was similar to what Apple offered. The retailer rebuffed the publisher and removed its e-books potentially as a negotiating tactic to make Macmillan feel the burn over lost sales. Two days later, Macmillan books were back on sale.
Amazon backed down and decided to give 70% of the revenue to Macmillan, compared to 50% before, and increased its pricing from $9.99 to between $12.99 and $14.99. It’s evident that Apple was the catalyst that publishers needed to pressure Amazon into listening to them and improving their revenue numbers.
