Google Buzz No Facebook, Twitter Killer, Says Google Exec

Users won’t stop comparing Buzz to Facebook or Twitter, but Bradley Horowitz, VP, Product Management, who’s in charge of managing Buzz, says they are not targeting Facebook or Twitter with their new social networking service. In fact, if anything, Google sees Buzz as a compliment to Facebook and Twitter. We’re obviously a little confused. What can you do on Buzz that you can’t currently do on Facebook or Twitter? Our network is primarily set on Facebook with multiple lists of people that we want to communicate with on various levels, so why we would we bother with yet another social network that ties our social graph into our contacts?

“Absolutely not. Per what I just said, this is creating a new category of communication. It’s filling a niche, which is not currently met in the market. I think something unique is happening on Buzz that will continue to evolve. It’s hard to create a trend line or extrapolate too much from six days of use, but certainly conversation and the conversational Web is a place where Buzz has excelled. I think it is unique and offers a compelling, interesting experience.” [eWeek]

Sorry to break it to you, Brad, but Buzz fills no need that Facebook or Twitter hasn’t met yet. You’re right about having conversations on Buzz, but don’t forget that’s Facebook and Twitter’s core value proposition. Sorry, but as far as we’re concerned, Buzz is exactly like Facebook and Twitter, except that it tries to pick at my contacts through Gmail.
