It’s not a big secret that social media in China is a bit of a joke. It’s not due to a lack of interest, rather the lack of individual freedom to participate with it. It seems this is about to change, according to a report from PC World. According to their recent piece, China’s President is looking to create a social network/Twitter-clone of their very own.

On the surface, this sounds fantastic! After all, China could take Identica or something like it and utilize a truly open source solution. This would actually put China up a notch in my book. Sadly, however, it appears that China is instead looking for something that adds restrictions. The service will be provided by the People’s Daily.
