The iPad Has Stacked the Deck Against Amazon Kindle

An iBookstore, just a few years ago the idea would have seemed unlikely for Apple. Yet now, according the Business Insider, it’s just around the corner for a mainstream release. While great news for us, it also translates into stiff competition for the Amazon Kindle.

The above linked article’s key point is that the iPad will provide bookstore purchasing simplicity, in contrast to that of the Kindle experience. Even with one-click buying from Amazon, you must bounce from the app to browser, back to the Kindle app. It’s rather messy in contrast to how Apple does things.

    "I just bought a Kindle.
    End of story."

You just bought a Kindle? Ummm, wow! You didn't notice that Amazon purchased a touchscreen company, and hired a whole fleet of engineers to try and build a color, touch, tablet device the week after Apple announced the iPad? Even Amazon knows the Kindle won't compare to the iPad.

Actually, I just thought of ONE case where a Kindle might make more sense than an iPad. If you read A LOT of novels in ebook form. It's true, the e-ink is easier on the eyes for extended periods of time.

Me? I'm buying the iPad mostly for web browsing and email. I may have a few ebooks on there, but I don't see myself reading too many books on it. (I do read a lot of very large novels, but I just don't see myself doing it on a ebook device right now. That may change in the future.)

Anyway, the iPad offers a TON more than the Kindle, but if the only feature you care about is reading novels, then enjoy your Kindle.

The iPad does not use electronic ink--Mr. Hartley is comparing apples and oranges. Who wants to read a book on a computer screen. The iPad is heavier, with much less battery life.

Wow, Matt -you obviously don't own a Kindle. Buying a book on the Kindle is easier than you could ever imagine. You are the only person I have ever heard say that the Kindle buying experience isn't the best interface they had ever seen. I can't imagine what you could be thinking - "messy in contrast to Apple"? Again - Wow.
