Why Apple Won’t Call The Next iPhone “iPhone 4G”

We’re guilty of this, but TUAW clears the air why Apple won’t call the 4th-generation iPhone the iPhone 4G. We’ve been calling the upcoming model iPhone 4G, and it’s because it’s much easier to read than the 4th-generation iPhone every time we have to refer to it. Obviously we don’t mean it will support 4G, the network technology. That’s absurd.

TUAW has a great write up on why Apple won’t call the next iPhone “iPhone 4G.” The article explains the terminology and history of Apple’s naming schemes to reason with us on that. In the end, they conclude that a lot of journalists will continue to call the next model the iPhone 4G and we concur. We’re sticking with it just to make it easy for you, our readers, to read our stories.

It is almost certainly going to be called "iPhone 3GX".

I would love to back this up with some faux third-hand rumour from inside Apple but my main reasoning behind it is that their marketing team won't go back through the alphabet from 3GS, and if you sound out the alternative lettering option from 3GT - 3GZ it is the only one that sounds a bit "Apple".
