Virgin America Drops Flash for iPhone Users
Apple’s iPhone, and now the iPad, may just spark a massive move to drop flash as the technology of choice for a lot of companies. Adobe should be threatened. Virgin CTO Ravi Simhambhatla said, “I don’t want to cater to one hardware or one software platform one way or another, and Flash eliminates iPhone users. This year is going to be the year of the mobile [for Virgin],” in an interview with Register UK.
Virgin’s Web site accounts for 70% of its $100M annual revenue, so it’s critical for the company to allow all mobile users to be able to access the site on any platform. Simhambhatla also said Virgin will move to HTML5 when the standards are finalized, which marks another win for the upcoming Web standard that Adobe said will take us to the dark ages of the Web.
