Google Nexus One May Not Hit Verizon Stores

We’ve been on top of this news story, and the details are starting to come out gradually. Earlier this week, we reported that Verizon may get the Google Nexus One soon to meet the Spring 2010 deadline that Google initially imposed on itself during the Nexus One launch. We later published another report indicating that the date may be March 23. However, we have more or less of a confirmation from Verizon that claims that just because there will be a Verizon version of the Nexus One, it doesn’t mean Verizon is selling it in its retail stores.

A Verizon spokesperson said, “[We] have never said that we were going to sell the Nexus One. What was said was the phone was to work on the Verizon Wireless network. That is very different from saying we were going to sell the phone in our stores.” [jkOnTheRun]

Clearly, this isn’t a confirmation on its own, but looking at Google’s interest in selling its phone through its online-only store, this makes sense, and it seems highly likely that Verizon may in fact not sell the phone directly. Just yesterday, Goldman Sachs lowered its estimates for Nexus One sales because of lack of marketing activity and lack of interest in traditional retail distribution channels. If this news holds true, then the investment bank was onto something with its substantially reduced forecast.

This also means that you can look forward to purchasing the Nexus One through Google come March 23.

I don't believe that Verizon spokesman crap...I called verizon numbers a few times myself and no one would mention anything about the nexus one. In my opinion, Google will release the phone to Verizon retail stores due to their lack of sales online. That makes sense.
  • I'd suspect that, too. But Google may be adamant about sticking to its online-only strategy. It doesn't really care about losing money if it can shake up a traditional business model or a particular industry. That's what it's trying to do with the online-only sales model with the Nexus One.
