Apple iPhone OS 4.0 Confirms Multitasking
In the beginning of last month, we chimed in with our thoughts about the iPhone OS 4.0 and one stellar feature that Apple will have to wow the audience at the iPhone 4G event in summer later this year. That feature was support for multitasking. We were criticized for making an assumption, but to us, it was just an obvious expectation from Apple. The company likes to make its users breathless before listening to their requests.
AppleInsider today confirms, through sources, that Apple will in fact enable multitasking in iPhone OS 4.0. Although some may argue that app alerts was multitasking disguised as a server-level solution, it wasn’t. It was always crippled. This time Apple is working on a “full-on solution” to make third-party apps run in the background.
The company has always addressed battery life and limited resources as the reason to not enable true multitasking, evidently, that issue has been resolved. There’s no word on how Apple has managed to do that yet, but we’re content with knowing that multitasking is coming in the next few months, and we’re excited to have it. It’s about time, Apple, it’s about time…
