No Verizon Nexus One, Google Confirms

And we have an end to this story. After covering what seemed like a million different rumors surrounding the Verizon Nexus One launch story, Google has finally put an end to it after confirming the company’s decision to not introduce the Nexus One for Verizon. Google has acknowledged the better and already-in-the-market alternative, the Droid Incredible, and is giving in.

The official statement from Google states, “We won’t be selling a Nexus One with Verizon, and this is a reflection of the amazing innovation happening across the open Android ecosystem. Verizon Wireless customers who want an Android phone with the power of the Nexus One can get the Droid Incredible by HTC.”

This suggests a few points that are important to consider for the long-term. One, Google was never really interested in being a hardware company. It wanted to showcase the power of Android, and it did, in successful partnership with HTC. Second, the company has no qualms about backing off and letting its partners benefit from Android implementation given the products are actually better. Google is completely in support with its partners, and that’s probably the reason why its partners are continuing to work with Android. Lastly, the search giant is more concerned about promoting Android as the defacto mobile OS than fighting over a few hundred thousand handsets. “Do no evil” is alive and kicking, at least for Android supporters.
