Android Devices Are Boring, I Said It
Android devices are boring. There, I said it. At CoolTechZone.com, we’ve covered tens of Android devices that promise and deliver the same. It’s the same hardware specs over and again with the same user interface. Even when the interfaces are different, such as the ones from Sony Ericsson and HTC, they go through their own issues. That’s not what this story is about. At least they add spice to the otherwise boring mix of Android devices.
Explain to me why I should be excited about the Android phones from Motorola, HTC, Sony Ericsson, LG and plenty of others. They end up packing the same hardware until one of the them pushes it further – usually HTC – which leads to everyone else rushing to integrate the same processor or the same amount of RAM on board. Hardware may be fast, but it’s boring. We get it. A 1GHz processor is fast. Enough with it already. Companies need to quit touting hardware as a way to entice consumers. It doesn’t work. Or won’t for long.
Let’s look at the HTC EVO 4G. It’s the most anticipated Android device currently, but for how long? Until everyone jumps on board and starts integrating the same hardware with support for 4G.
The only thing going for these companies are custom interfaces, but they have their own problems. With off the shelf hardware, which requires no effort, these companies can’t even get their custom interfaces to work properly. They are usually lagging with a host of issues that only Sony Ericsson and HTC can fix. That almost negates the point of having the best in class hardware.
I’m sick of hearing about new phones on the horizon when hardly anything is unique about them. Seriously, partners, can we get our creative juices flowing and make these devices stand out? Packing a 8-megapixel camera doesn’t cut it.
I suppose if we’re going to stick with the “smartphones are the new PCs” analogy, then manufacturers need to realize how boring PCs became after a decade when everyone’s lust for speed wore off and prices declined. If you want to experience the razor thin margins that Dell and HP are experiencing now, by all means, stick to this strategy of boasting about hardware. Give it three years and hardware will become a commodity that won’t help you sell any Android device.
