Is Android Fragmentation Becoming A Problem?

Is Google Android fragmentation a mere myth or a sadly ignored reality that is creating headaches for users and developers alike? Based on what I have seen, I think there is some credence to fragmentation and if Google is not careful, it could develop into a real problem for the otherwise successful mobile platform.

PCWorld describes the issue of Android fragmentation, as something lacking clear explanation and often becoming an idea over used by tech pundits. Fact is this – some Android apps are not able to run on older releases of Android. We can call it whatever we wish. But the one clear take away here is that this is a problem and it’s not being addressed quickly enough. Yes, Google is indeed working on the problem. But seeing folks running away from the term Android fragmentation is not helping matters in the meantime.
