Facebook is clearly positioning themselves for big things. With Twitter being their only real competition, as other social networks simply not pose a threat, it makes sense to reinforce their position with every tool available.

According to GigaOm, Friendster patents have been purchased by Facebook recently. The patents relate to the ability to offer advertising in addition to offering virtual goods to the masses. And considering the fact that Friendster was headed into an early demise anyway, selling off the patents makes a lot of sense.
