Continued...

Products and services aside, the company is so out of control, it has nearly lost touch with reality. With half the consumer friendly services it offers, there are privacy concerns bundled in the package. But that’s nothing compared to Google’s recent deletion accidents.

A few users reported that Google has deleted their GMail accounts, which appears to be inadvertent, though those users can say goodbye to the data they had stored on Google’s servers permanently. If I’m not mistaken, the point of having 2GB+ of storage is to store important e-mails and large files for easy accessibility. Logically, many users preferably use GMail as a source of backing up their vital data, but if Google can’t offer a sense of surety, it’s difficult to see how it expects to maintain numerous files for an office suite or an operating system, for that matter.

In another laughable incident, Google deleted its very own blog, which the company reregistered soon after. Not too long ago, confidential documents, highlighting the company’s roadmap, also made their way to the web. The point is - in addition to being directionless; Google is a bamboozled company that can’t even protect its own data. And with an increasing number of irresponsible actions, it’s becomes hard to trust such a company.

As it currently stands, Google has become a wishy-washy company that’s desperately trying to maintain its coolness factor with any means possible. More importantly, however, I think it’s time Google redefined itself and set a new direction. Does it want to be a content portal, similar to Yahoo? Or does it want to be a services giant with search, office suite and a possible operating system? What is it trying to accomplish exactly? Oh and while it’s redefining itself, it might as well take the time to carefully plan its presentation strategies. These regular mishaps (leaked documents, account deletion) are started to get tiring, and for a company that vows to protect user data, it’s not too encouraging.
