Continued:

Personally, I feel the formats war will not be won solely on superior technology for if you see (in terms of capabilities) Blu-Ray is clearly better than HD. It has higher capacity, and if users need to upgrade to HD, they might as well buy a BR player, as the hybrid disc concept can work on BR as well.

The war here will be won based on content; if studios release movies on a particular format, the end user will purchase players for the specified format, and as of today, BR has far more backing from studios than HD does. Apart from the names mentioned above (Paramount, Warner Brothers, Columbia Tristar and MGM), 20th Century Fox is on board as well, along with EA, Vivendi Universal Games, Disney, Buena Vista and many more.

Moreover, if you look at Microsoft, it has hedged it’s bets by saying that HD will enjoy native support, but you can download an additional pack for BR which means that if BR becomes mainstream, it’ll simply make it a mandatory upgrade in one of the service packs, and thus get itself out of the corner. Intel is probably not bothered one way or another, as it’s not really a player in the space, so that really doesn’t count much.

Interestingly, if you put in the search string "hd dvd official website" (without quotes) in Google, the first match you get is a link to Blu-Ray’s website. Maybe it’s a sign of things to come, but then again, maybe it’s not. Only time will tell…
