(Column) - I've already talked about the extensive initiative that the wireless industry is going to have to take because of Google. It's scared of Google. If not scared, it wants to get its fair share of advertising revenue from Google. What better way to do that than becoming partners with one of the top online advertising companies. It makes sense. What has me laughing is the knee jerk reaction from wireless carriers. First Verizon, now AT&T. What's up, guys? Changing your tune so quickly? Android has just made the headlines. You could've waited just for the sake of not looking desperate. Reactions like this are only going to anger everyone that's already opposed to closed networks.
The amusing aspect of AT&T's press release announcing their open network is silly. Their network has always been open and compliant with a variety of GSM phones, even the ones that weren't designed for AT&T specifically. This just goes to show you how important openness is suddenly to carriers. Talk about a change of heart! Google Threatens Wireless Industry And Wins Google may be turning more evil each day, but the way its tackling Goliath-like industries one-by-one is surreal to watch. Seriously, a friendly note to carriers, take it easy, will ya? I get your concerns, but must you contradict your existing business model so soon. You disapprove your entire existence. I'm amused, yet appalled, at the same time.
Let me get this straight: you always had the option to open your network (with Verizon), or at least promote it heavily (with AT&T), but chose not to do it? Why? And I presume, your peers are in the same boat. We should expect others to follow shortly and open their networks as well. This is just pathetic. You could've won the hearts of consumers with open networks sooner and made it your play. Now you look like scared little kids who are obligated to follow rules because their parents (that would be Google for you) told them so. A bit childish, wouldn't you agree?
Anyways, I just wanted to point out how we, as consumers, are viewing your latest shenanigans. It's amusingly depressing. Click here to check out the latest cell phone prices on Amazon.com!
