(Column) - There is no question that most Linux distributions are too much for most people. I say this as a PC power user who happens to be a full-time Ubuntu/Fedora user. And back in 2004-2005, Linspire was indeed, the best overall beginner-friendly Linux option in the market. Then came improvements to Mandriva, new options like Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS (based on Mandriva), and recently, the new Fedora 8.

As an installable distro, Linspire has suddenly found themselves in a crowded marketplace. Even worse is that one distro is going to make life very tough for them - it's called gOS. I have talked at length about gOS in the past, how it sold out completely as it was OEM'ed on PCs sold at Wal-Mart and accomplished in a few days what Linspire never managed to do - get people lining up for this project.

Why Wal-Mart Linux PC Is A Bad Deal

I have also talked about what Linspire will eventually have to do in order to keep things moving forward as their current OEM options are really poor in selection, and some people are apparently still waiting to have their orders fulfilled. Other links fall into pages explaining that Linspire products are no longer for sale. And good luck finding a decent notebook pre-installed with Linspire or Freespire!

Others still hold their latest effort in high regard, Freespire 2.0, as it's indeed, easier to use than Ubuntu proper for someone coming off of Windows. They will point to the fact that it comes ready to go with restricted codecs to play MP3s and Windows Media files and those are valid points. However, just when things could not get any worse, the new pre-installed Linux revolution has exploded and largely left Linspire with a now dated version of its Ubuntu base.
