Page 3 of 3 Continued... Now to be honest, I have this amazing fascination with Blackberry. I don’t know why, but I just think it’s impressive. The way you can send messages in real-time is impressive and never ceases to amaze me. There is another side to it, however. If you are always available on e-mail, then you are definitely working around the clock. If your boss calls you up, you may not pick up your phone to avoid work. If he mails you on your Blackberry, you have received the instructions, and e-mails from your boss have certain finality to them. The question is not just about Blackberry. It’s about the way technology has woven itself into the very fabric of our lives. Is it good to be always reachable? Whatever happened to personal space? Personal time? The time when you stretched your legs and nothing beeped, nothing rang and you just read a book you always wanted to, or just played a board game. The stressed life that technology has given today takes its toll not just on the stressed out worker, but on everyone around him and even our taxes, at least to an extent. Stressed out people are more likely to make errors, smoke and drink, which means that the health costs incline stably. Since the government ultimately bears the health facility cost, it takes it out of salaries paid to you and me by means of added tax. Do we really want this much technology around us? Do we really want to be so dependent and tied to technology? As I see it, technology is not making life easy anymore if we are always tied to our work. Yes, I do understand that the phone can be switched off as well, but how many of you actually do it? Seriously, let’s make a poll out of this. If you use Blackberry and switch it off after work hours everyday, please do write in and let me know. Also, if you have a Blackberry, try and calculate how many more hours of work you are putting in everyday once you leave office which, before Blackberry, were being put to good use by leisurely activities. Calculate and please send in your views, I would be glad to get more opinions on this. |
