Page 2 of 2 Continued... There is an interesting reason for Digital Playground to side with Blu-Ray. Their reasoning is that each PS3 will have a Blu-Ray drive. PS3 will obviously reach homes before most of them buy an exorbitantly priced Blu-Ray or HD-DVD players. In such a scenario, Blu-Ray will make an entry into the homes and mind space of customers way before its archrival, HD-DVD. Microsoft has perhaps made a mistake by not bundling in an HD-DVD drive with its Xbox 360, and thus might not be able to help the HD-DVD team in the way the PS3 would help the Blu-Ray format. Plus, according to Digital Playground, Blu-Ray discs are more secure than HD-DVD, and can therefore ensure that piracy is avoided. This means the content providers actually think like Sony and are willing to go with a tougher, firmer standard to ensure content protection rather than go the easy route with consumer friendly formats that can result in rampant piracy. Well, I'd rather not see Sony with its DRM history taking the lead, or worse, winning the format war with Blu-Ray because there is no telling what copy protection method it will employ with such monopoly. Then again, as Ive said, sex sells and perhaps this time, Blu-Ray will ride the wave and come out on the top. |
