(Column) - Yay for Sony! For the first time ever, Sony's PS3 has surpassed sales against Nintendo Wii in Japan, one of the most important markets for console makers. According to Enterbrain, a trade magazine, Sony sold 183,217 units of PS3 compared to Wii's 159,193 in November, a striking 15.1 percent difference. Personally, it depicts sign of life for Sony, at least in Japan, which is cool. I'm glad to see Sony is not dying a slow, torturous death against Nintendo. Hey, the yesteryear king of consoles deserves some sympathy.

While this tidbit of news is great, you have to wonder if this is a changing situation for Sony and Nintendo. Obviously Nintendo doesn't care much about losing out to Sony in November. It's a small setback for the otherwise amazingly successful company that completely turned itself around and is winning the console war - with perception and in actual sales count. However, does Sony have what it takes to win against Nintendo one month after another? It's doubtful at best.

Nintendo Wii Wins The Console War Hands Down

Despite recent success in Japan, it's not the entire market. Sony must continue to focus in North American and European markets if it wants to move ahead. Not to mention, while Sony is contemplating its next move, Nintendo is ready to move along. It's almost surreal with the Wii maker. The company will soon announce Wii Fit, a balance board for virtual Yoga sessions and skiing. It's the interactivity of Wii that gets everyone going, as it gives new meaning to the words healthy gaming. Sony, on the contrary, is bleh. Regardless, it does have a more mature selection of gaming titles than Wii, which is what makes it attractive to serious gamers who are a little too competitive about their games.

Market analysts predict Wii Fit will help Nintendo see another spike in Wii sales. All this for the same price + the price of the accessories. Sony has no other choice from an innovation standpoint, but to further cut its price. So really, at the end of the day, it's very limited in what it can do. But it's showing signs of life, and that's encouraging, even though it's still substantially behind Wii.

My recommendation to Sony: keep at it. I hope you realize you are really competing against Microsoft more than you are going up against the newly crowed console king Nintendo.
