Continued...

Even though your iPod may be able to hold your entire music collection and more, it’s not like you always need to have that much content with you. Our tastes in music constantly change, and at any given moment, there are probably a handful of songs that you can’t stop listening to, and when you have your iPod with you, all you may do is play that same smallish playlist over and again. You see, even though your cell phone may only be able to hold one hundred songs or so, that’s probably just enough space for your current favorites. Just transfer them over to your phone, and you’re in business. Suddenly, there’s no real need to carry an extra device for quick trips around town.

Now, don’t get me wrong - this isn’t exactly making Apple shake in their boots, but it does help to indicate what else they need to focus on. Their attention in this matter can be seen by the partnership that they developed with Motorola to put iTunes on a phone called the ROKR, which is also known by its street name as the Motorola NoOneWantsToBuyThisThing. This co-branded device proved that just because iTunes is on something, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be a success. In order for Apple to really succeed in the mobile phone market, they need to develop the products themselves.

There has been talk abut an Apple phone (or iPhone, if you will) for some time, and all signs indicate that they’re cooking something up in the deep recesses of Apple HQ. Let’s just hope that the recipe is satisfactory. It’s not enough to only focus on the music and the design of the thing - they also have to make sure that it’s a great phone. If it’s not, then why even attempt to do this at all? They should obviously make the device appealing to as many people as possible, but in my mind, the thing that’s really going to make it take off with Mac users is deep integration with OS X. If it syncs well with my operating system, then I’ll be highly persuaded to purchase it. Support for iTunes is great, but I also want support for iCal, iPhoto, Mail, and so on. If they can hit that target, then that will definitely be the sweet spot.
