Page 2 of 2 Continued... In the end, it’s not that we are seeing tremendous innovation, except in rare instances it seems, it’s just that companies are bold and ridiculously dull enough to invest in absurd projects. What’s the point of innovating when they are going to turn around, copy Apple-like companies and start developing products chaotically? Then they blame the company that actually innovated in its true meaning for monopolizing the market and owning majority of the market share. Is it seriously a surprise to them, or do they really not get this phenomena? Call me naïve, but technology companies have completely the opposite and most simplistic view of innovation. Following (read: plagiarizing) a successful technology or design from an original company is how the technology companies define innovation. Look at Adsense, Google’s contextual advertising method, where it delivers text ads to publishers and the search engine component of its site. Google has single-handedly revolutionized the online advertising industry, proving the effectiveness of unobtrusive advertising by generating billions annually. As a result, what do we see now? Microsoft, Ask and Yahoo all have their own contextual versions of Adsense. I’m not saying that companies must not be competitive, but the least they could do is show originality (coming up with new names does not count). This holds true more for tangible products than services. The unfortunate truth is that companies aren’t willing to take risks with new technologies and products, but they are perfectly fine spending millions on absurd and futuristic devices that may never make it to the market just so they can call themselves cutting edge and innovative. The state of the technology industry is spiraling down as definitions are twisted to hide fallacies. There’s nothing we, as consumers, can do or suggest to change this habit. It’s up to the companies to change this conformist behavior and emerge as leaders with innovative products that we can sincerely appreciate.
