Then there is the issue of security. Google boasts that your privacy is job one. Yet, their expansion plans appear to nullify that stance. If they were asked to do so, they could potentially turn over a wide variety of information on countless people. After all, they have access to your e-mail, pictures, chat conversations and even your actual desktop. What, you thought that Google Desktop was a one way proposition? Here is a quote from their privacy policy:

"The Google Desktop application indexes and stores versions of your files and other computer activity, such as email, chats, and web history. These versions may also be mixed with your Web search results to produce results pages for you that integrate relevant content from your computer and information from the Web. Your computer's content is not made accessible through Google Desktop to Google without your explicit permission."

Basically you are fine unless a federal warrant is issued? Thanks Google, but I'll pass on that offer.

So their desktop application is evil. At least they support "good works" such as the Firefox web browser. It's great that we can sleep soundly knowing that they cannot corrupt the Mozilla Foundation; or is it the Mozilla Corporation? Apparently it's both these days, depending on their function at the time. Thanks to some fancy tax work, it appears that Google may have found a way to dump millions into a very successful nonprofit. Yes, a nonprofit that embeds their own browser into their flagship product. And with each search made, revenue is generated for both Google and Mozilla. Sounds non-profitable to me!

Understand that I have no ill feelings toward the organization that created my favorite web browser. I have found however, that it's really difficult to dump insane amounts of cash into something like Mozilla and not end up with an abundance of blind loyalty. After all, it's really tough being objective with your top sponsor when they're throwing buckets of cash at you.

Oh well, at least we can count on the bloggers out there to keep a clear focus on Google's activities. They certainly have no financial stake in the search engine company, right. Uh, scratch that. Thanks to Google's advertising program, the bloggers who end up with the most readers stand to make a killing when using AdSense. Heck, I know of a few people that make more than $5k a month from the program. As a result, the likelihood of a Google compensated blogger bad mouthing them is next to nill. It is after all, pretty gutsy to be bad mouthing your bread winner. And most bloggers simply don't have the nerve for it.

Then we have to consider all of the ramifications of their APIs. Granted, they have inspired some really cool API based web applications, but unfortunately that leaves us with little more than a tool which works to further solidify their already powerful brand.

So when people ask me when Google is going to come out with the Google OS, I stop to point at my web browser window and explain that they already have.
