Page 1 of 2 Courtesy of OSWeekly.com (Column) - Word on the street is that many businesses are simply not interested in Vista. The Seattle PI ran a recent piece that explains how many companies have decided early on that they are not really interested in dealing with the likelihood of a fresh set of Windows Updates. See, the reality is that there are still many businesses that are perfectly happy running Windows 2K, not even considering an upgrade to anything else. After all, in their eyes, why change what the company in question is using now? Straight from the mouth of a CIO: In the same article from the PI, CIO for CKE Restaurants, Inc. Jeff Chasney explained that he is of the mind that allowing someone else to play Microsoft's Guinea Pig makes more sense. And to some Windows fans, this is very sad as Vista may turn out to be a great OS for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, targeting the business world first will prove to be a costly mistake as most businesses will not make the move until Vista's value has been proven in the real world. It's About Safety And Security. So, should Vista be targeting the home user first instead? It might be a good place to start. As cool as Vista is in comparison to XP, the fact remains that it's not offering clear reasons for people to switch. Having said this, I'd say their best bet is to target gamers and PC enthusiasts first, and businesses second. In my opinion, this would allow them to work out the bugs in addition to developing a strong user base for an OS that quite frankly is going to have its fair share of challenges. As the issues come up (and they will), they can be worked out as the user base continues to grow. After the OS has been out in the world for at least 6 months, then they can begin hitting the business world directly with a proven track record vs. a lot of speculation that "everything is going to be fine" in the Windows Updates world. |
