Logitech Quickcam Ultra Vision

(Review) - Thanks to the high resolution lens, it’s actually fun and useful to use webcams these days. Back when webcams were first introduced, the quality was terrible, and the concept of doing video conferencing with such poor cameras was a joke. Not anymore, though. Take the Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision, for instance. It’s a 1.3-megapixel camera combined with Logitech’s in-house RightLight 2 technology and an excellent exterior.

The Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision is quite a hefty camera with a strong, relatively durable build. You will feel the camera when you first get it out of its box. The rubber holder at the back is as solid as you will get, and its grasp on our LCD panel was quite remarkable. Right in the middle of the device, Logitech has integrated a microphone that yields echo-free audio output, making conferencing a pleasant experience. There’s also the activity LED in the middle that turns blue when the QuickCam Ultra Vision is active, which was a nice touch. As you move to the side, you will notice the snapshot button for quick Kodak moments. The lens also rotates to capture various angles. Really, the Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision has a superior design, a professional appearance and a solid body that makes it a great peripheral to have.

Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision Special Edition Review

Wait… that’s not the end of the QuickCam Ultra Vision, though. The bundled QuickCam application is where it’s at. The application lets you adjust a variety of settings of the camera, including image orientation settings, light settings and much more. The RightLight 2 technology is one of most exciting features of the Ultra Vision. It was amazing to see our face light up even in the most atrocious lighting conditions. The idea behind the technology is to artificially enhance the lighting conditions despite the dull background. There are also a variety of fun effects you can participate in, such as putting a hat over your head with the application. Needless to say, using the application with the webcam was a pure joy. There’s also face tracking capabilities, so if you expect to use the webcam as a security device, it may just do the trick.

Interestingly enough, we couldn’t find any flaws with the device at all, and that’s saying something. It looks like Logitech may just be onto a near perfect device. With that said, Mac support would’ve been certainly appreciated. It just doesn’t make sense to deprive our Mac friends of something as wonderful as the Ultra Vision. Oh, and the webcam isn’t compatible with notebooks either. Unless you want to be creative, the QuickCam Ultra Vision is designed to work with desktop computers. It’s a pity, since we expect a lot of mobile professionals to be impressed with Logitech’s latest offering. Oh well, you gain something, you lose something.

All in all, for the price of $79.99, Logitech’s QuickCam Ultra Vision is a superb bargain.
