(Column) - The latest buzz in the industry currently is Microsoft’s soon to be announced Origami. Ever since the video leak, there have been more than enough speculations to fill a truck fleet. From the looks of the video, the device appears to be a must have, though some may disagree with me.

As is clear from the video (assuming it’s true), the device does everything but make phone calls (why the exclusion?). Most people find a device doing so many things quite complex and using it: daunting.

Microsoft has made the device look ridiculously simple. Reason being, let people be open to the idea of experiencing it, let them not get put off by adding too many buttons all around the unit, and thus make it more welcoming for consumers to appreciate the features (read: Steve Jobs and Apple’s product designs).

With that explanation out of the way, let’s delve into Origami. First up, the minute the video was leaked; we tried to get in touch with Microsoft, but didn’t hear back at the time. Once they did reply, we inquired about Origami, but the only response we got (and it came a bit too quick) was: "It’s the ancient art of folding paper."

The secretiveness not withstanding, the choice of the name is definitely an interesting one. Origami essentially means twisting the same sheet of paper into various different shapes. Origami, the device, is fundamentally the same gadget that performs various tasks. Simple, subtle and productive. I have a strong feeling that Microsoft somehow managed to poach a few marketing geniuses from Apple to come up with the concept.
