Motorola RAZR V8

(First Look) - Motorola is back in the race with a new lineup of cell phones, and thankfully, they are not the same old RAZR iterations. No, Motorola is serious this time and rightfully so. One of the three models that were launched yesterday includes the V8. Do keep in mind that the company’s latest product lineup was inspired from its predecessor. However, they are certainly refreshing, and it’s great to see Motorola come back in the race after a long wait.

The Motorola RAZR V8 is equipped with a 500MHz microprocessor, a 2.2-inches QVGA 320x240 display and 262k color support. The secondary display is similar to the primary one, albeit with a slightly smaller display at 2.0-inches. It’s nice to see Motorola take both displays seriously, especially now that the V8 offers a lot more functionality where both displays could be useful in navigating through the various options. It also has 512MB or 2GB of onboard memory, micro USB connectivity and Bluetooth wireless option for headsets.

The RAZR V8 is integrated with a 2.0-megapixel camera with multi image capturing feature, video playback capability at 15fps, 2x hours of playback time, video streaming, progressive download functionality and blogging2 platform from Motorola.

Then there’s the music player as well. You can load up to 250 or 1,000 songs depending on the storage version you have, access controls directly from the primary display and close the phone, audio streaming, front-end controls, 1-key launch and a streamlined improvement in navigation overall. Motorola really seems to have worked out a lot of the kinks that currently plague today’s cell phones, and it’s neat to see the troubled consumer electronics giant focus on minute details to improve the overall experience.

For browsing, Opera 8.5 is available with the ability to upload/download images and videos. EDGE is also available for relatively fast web browsing, though EV-DO is clearly the choice for upcoming phones. E-mail and other standard options are present as well.

The RAZR V8 is very slick and stylish, something that should be expected from Motorola. They have clearly pushed the standard from the original RAZR, which was a huge success for them, but it was overtaken by a number of other companies later on. What’s interesting to note is that Motorola isn’t making any bold promises with its new phone lineup (other than what you would normally expect), but many of the improvements are really done under the hood. They have streamlined the navigation and UI configurations to improve user experience. Naturally, there are very few new features that will make you go wow, but the overall experience should be quite pleasant.

Motorola is on the right track with the RAZR V8, and we expect to fully evaluate their latest offering in the near future.
