(Review) - Although the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium flash drive has been in the market for a while, it wasn’t too long ago until SanDisk released an updated version with U3 technology. Really, that’s the only update SanDisk has made, and it makes the drive more productive and useful than ever before.

The Cruzer is based on a slider design where the USB connector slides out with the push of a thumb. It also doubles as a status device with LED lights that light up accordingly. But perhaps the most interesting (and possibly critical) thing to note is that it can handle 2,000-pounds of pressure before giving away. This makes it an ideal drive for people who work in the construction industry or in a warehouse, where a heavyweight object could easily damage an average drive. Generally, flash drives are fairly durable, but just to be on the safe side, we recommend you check the drive to make sure it can handle rough handling (if that’s something you are concerned with). Other than that, the exterior of the device is made of Titanium with the engraved SanDisk logo on the back. It really is a nice looking drive with more than adequate functionality.

If companies want to retail flash drives these days, it’s not enough to increase the onboard storage, add a robust security application and be done with it. With so many drives competing for your attention, storage and security won’t cut it anymore. As a result, a lot of companies, including SanDisk, Lexar and others, had showcased a version of their U3 technology at CES 2006. The concept is simple. It’s a hassle when you are using someone else’s PC and you don’t have a list of your bookmarks, or maybe they don’t have the browser you are comfortable with. That’s what U3 and its variants solve - cross system compatibility.

You can think of U3 as a customized programs menu with a list of your favorite applications that you can install on the drive. SanDisk has a library of most commonly used applications (Firefox, Skype and many others) where you can go to install new applications immediately. Since all applications are installed on the drive, you can plug-in the drive in any PC and continue using the applications with custom settings on the go.

To make things interesting and productive, it’s not a matter of drag-and-drop as a way to backup data anymore. SanDisk’s customized backup utility works like a charm. You can backup your browser settings, standard data and e-mail. Based on the configuration, you can manually click to synchronize data whenever you connect the drive, or it will automatically synchronize it for you. However, you will have to manually add the folders that you would like to synchronize, which can be a pain if you don’t want to backup the entire folder. In that case, we recommend you move your most commonly used files to My Documents or another folder to make it easy on yourself. The e-mail functionality is also impressive. You can send/receive messages directly on the drive with custom settings and later synchronize them with your PC. It’s also important to remember that although you can natively install as many applications as you would like on the drive, you are limited to 2GB of storage (the highest capacity of the Cruzer Titanium), and you must allocate enough space for backing up your critical files.

Not too long ago, we evaluated OCZ’s 1GB Mini-Kart drive and the results were in favor of the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium majority of the way through. Although we suspect storage size differences for performance disparity between the two to an extent, the results should give you a glimpse of what you can expect from the Cruzer.

SanDisk packs a powerful, portable solution for data conscious users who enjoy their freedom with the Cruzer Titanium. While U3 technology is the future of portable storage devices, the onboard backup utility seals the deal for us. It’s an amazing utility that works like a charm. Overall, SanDisk was right in updating the 2GB version (though we would like to see U3 on all available options) with updated technology that increases productivity and usefulness of the unit. For the average price of $77.99, the Cruzer Titanium is a steal and a must-have tool for everyone with no drawbacks.
