(First Look) - Motorola has taken over the cell phone market with innovative designs ever since the launch of its successful RAZR series. After the RAZR, we saw L6, L7 and now PEBL entering the crowded market, but because of Motorola’s seemingly unending success with the RAZR family of products, it has established itself as the hip-hop brand of cell phones, especially for the gadget savvy target market.

At a first glance, the PEBL looks just like, well, a pebble. The edges are smooth, stylistic and chic – the three most elements that are needed to impress the crowd initially. Motorola steps out of the traditional design and adds its own touch. As we now know, Motorola has that special touch, which is apparently discovered with the RAZR.

In addition to its delicate design, Motorola packs in Motospeak, a speech-activated command application. You can use voice commands to access special areas of the phone, such as e-mail or the camera utilities. The still camera has a 4x digital zoom configuration with video play capture and playback in MPEG4 format. Unfortunately, the PEBL only has 5MB of onboard storage, and thus it makes it pointless to have high-end camera capabilities.

According to Motorola, the PEBL has 400 minutes of talk time, 250 minutes of standby time and includes Bluetooth connectivity options, which are all acceptable options, to say the least.

Initial Thoughts: Assuming the exterior isn’t sensitive and the design is not too far-fetched, the PEBL might set a new standard in the industry. The exterior has an exclusive feel to it that no other cell phone maker has adopted yet. The phone configuration, onboard features and technical specifications all appear to be on par. Unfortunately, Motorola doesn’t discuss the camera option in the commonly understood megapixel terminology, which makes it difficult to compare it initially. Hopefully, the controls are acceptable and not the tricky sort that we’ve seen on a few Motorola phones. The PEBL is currently available for retail for $299.99, a hefty price tag.
