(First Look) - Cell phones are gradually transitioning into an all around multimedia devices, and Sony Ericsson is right there making sure the transition is smooth, but swift. Take a look at the company’s latest K790a cell phone, for instance. This new phone from Sony Ericsson has a 3.2-megapixel camera with an EDGE compatible cell phone all packed in a sleek, compact body. Companies are getting mature, too. Back in the olden days of camera phones, they embedded a lens on the outer exterior of the phone and expected it work. Needless to say, after a while, the lens would surround itself with piles of dust and cleaning it would be next to impossible. In other words, earlier camera phones were a disgrace to functionality and photography.

Today, however, the K790a has a lens cover (which you obviously need with a 3.2-megapixel camera), autofocus capability, built-in xenon flash, image stabilizer and video stabilizer to ensure perfect capture of memorable moments. The screen should be gorgeous at 240x320 resolution with support for 262k colors. As always, recent cell phones also come with integrated audio players, and K790a is no exception; it supports MP3 and AAC audio formats.

What we fail to understand is the lack of resourceful onboard memory. The K790a comes embedded with 64MB of memory. If the phone supports music, video and photo playback, plus millions of other options, why does Sony Ericsson pack 64MB of memory? As a result, if you want to seriously take advantage of the included features, you must invest additionally in memory sticks to increase internal memory.

The K790a is loaded with literally hundreds of features that cell phones enthusiasts will find useful. This includes 16x digital zoom, autofocus, BestPic technology, picture blogging, video recording and tons more under the imaging category. The quantity continues with a wide array of messaging options with support for e-mail, SMS, MMS and sound recording capabilities and 3D games, flight mode, Java support, integrated media player, FM radio and much more under the phone’s entertainment subtitle. Of course, who could forget the seemingly standard options, such as an alarm clock, calculator, calendar, EDGE, GPRS, Infrared and USB support?

According to Sony Ericsson, the K790a has 7 hours of talk time and 350 hours of standby time.

Wow! That’s all we can say about this phone. Theoretically, Sony Ericsson has a killer device in its product line. Obviously the price tag on this device will be out of reach for many, but if you are willing to wait six months or so, this phone should still be a topnotch player in its category.
