(First Look) - We always like what iRiver has to offer to its customers. Its MP3 players and PMP devices are almost always excelling in performance and features that users seek in a well rounded device. Unfortunately, iRiver is liquidating its MP3 player business unit and focusing on other projects. But despite the regrettable news, iRiver recently unveiled a new PMP that grabbed headlines with surge, the iRiver Clix. We have always liked iRiver PMPs, and Clix is no different. It’s packed with features and can play music, videos, photos and more. It supports subscription based music services, has a bright 2.2" display with built-in digital FM tuner, integrated voice recorder, up to 25 hours of battery life, skip-free listening and an alarm clock. What more could you want from a PMP device. It’s almost as though portable multimedia players are the next-generation MP3 players. Just like any decent portable audio player, the Clix has SRS WOW technology for audio enhancement, equalizer presets, support for a variety of audio (MP3, WMA, OGG) and video (MPEG4, Flash) formats. Unfortunately though, it only supports JPEG for photos. Considering that a number of updated devices (whether audio or video) now support PNG and TIFF, having limited support is somewhat discouraging. Regrettably, Clix is only available in 2GB version, and considering the amount of options it has and the 25 hour battery life, 2GB is unjustified. While the $199.99 price tag is attractive, we don’t think anyone would mind spending more than $199.99 for a PMP with more storage. iRiver Clix is available immediately and gauging from initial reviews, iRiver has a winner in its product line.
