Microsoft Corp. continues to drop vague hints about the company's consumer electronics device, codenamed Origami, that's expected to debut on March 9th.

The software maker launched origamiproject.com last week and has been dropping constant hints on a weekly basis. Other than the name and the concept, the rest is unclear.

According to industry analysts, Origami could be a portable computer with Windows XP, a portable version of the Xbox 360 gaming console, a music player or even a phone. The speculations are endless.

If Origami is a portable, handheld computer, it would compete against similar devices from Toshiba and Nokia. However, analysts suggested that Microsoft would have to make the device affordable in order for it to gain mass acceptance.

Even though high-end portable computers have been in the market for sometime, they haven’t been popular due to their hefty price tags.

As speculations continue, Robert Scoble, a Microsoft tech evangelist warned that inflated expectations may lead to a disappointment.

"Seriously, let's keep our hype in check, OK?" Scoble wrote in his blog.
