Nokia today announced a partnership with Apple Computer to develop a browser for its Series 60 smartphones. The new browser will let users view full webpages on the mobile phones.

Nokia said it will use the same technology as Apple’s open-source Safari browser. Safari is based on WebCore and JavaScriptCore components, which were originally based on KHTML and KJS technologies from the KDE Konquerer browser.

The phone maker said the new browser would be easier for developers to modify and add features as deemed necessary by users.

Nokia said it’s excited to work with Apple and the open-source community. "Open source development also enables close cooperation with the industry's best innovators, such as Apple. Both Apple and Nokia share a commitment to Internet standards and the use of a common code. The unified and compatible browser base will offer a very compelling choice for Web content developers," said Pertti Korhonen, CTO, Nokia.

The company further added that it would be more involved in the open-source community, and Apple in general. "Open-source software and Linux is an interesting phenomenon--it is not new for Nokia," said Tero Ojanpera, CSO, Nokia. "We are more and more using open source in our developments." Nokia said it would most likely introduce the new mobile browser sometime before the end of Q2, 2006.
