Asian electronics maker Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. have plans to take on Apple’s iPod with its upcoming six new MP3 players. While the firm did not disclose many details on the models, it was confident enough in its new line that may shake Apple somewhat. Apple Computer has been enjoying the success of its iPod music player ever since it launched. Since then, companies like Creative, Sony, Dell, Gateway and now Samsung see the potential market and are doing what they can to take away some market shares away from the iPod maker. Samsung’s new MP3 players will be branded under its "Yepp" brand and will come in 256MB flash version to a 30GB hard drive version. The company’s goal right now is to push the sales of its music players to five million units this year as opposed to 1.7 million in 2004. "We aim to sell more than 5 million MP3 players this year versus 1.7 million sold last year and will seek various strategic alliances with content providers such as Microsoft to boost sales," said Kim Suh-Kyum, Vice President, Samsung Electronics. The new portable audio players will feature colored screens with radio tuners. They will also allow users to take photographs on the go and watch music videos. The electronics maker hopes to grab as much as 10 percent of the U.S. market shares this year. The company did not disclose pricing on the upcoming models at the press conference.
